About Sobertown
Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety.
We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection.
Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual.
But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side.
We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction.

Saturday Apr 06, 2024
Host: Kevin Beaufrand
The ethos of Soberflex is represented in each of its letters. By fully immersing yourself into the system, you can expect to find a life that perfectly aligns with what is described in this acronym.
Soberflexing is a journey that goes beyond traditional pathways of recovery. It's about amplifying the triumphs of sobriety through a dual lens: optimal health and pride. This holistic approach invites individuals to embrace their journey with strength, health, and loud, unapologetic pride.
The essence of Soberflexing is deeply rooted in the KNOWMERGE system, a comprehensive framework designed to guide individuals through the multifaceted aspects of health that are critical to sustaining a vibrant, sober life. This system encompasses physical well-being, mental resilience, and emotional stability, encouraging a deep dive into the pillars of health that support recovery on all fronts.
By adopting Soberflexing, we not only focus on maintaining sobriety but also on thriving in every aspect of our lives. It's about becoming obsessively committed to our health, transforming our lives from the ground up, and harnessing the power of our past struggles to fuel our journey forward.
Soberflexing is a bold stance we take to celebrate our sobriety and to share our stories loudly and proudly. This approach challenges the traditional narratives of recovery, breaking the silence and stigma associated with addiction. It's a testament to the strength and resilience that lies within each of us, a reminder that we are not defined by our past but by the incredible journey we embark on towards healing and self-discovery.
Join us on this empowering journey of Soberflexing, where your struggles become your superpowers, and your commitment to health becomes your loudest declaration of freedom. Through the KNOWMERGE system, we'll navigate the path to optimal health and well-being together, embracing our sobriety with every step we take.
So what do you say, do you want to flex your sobriety?
Kevin Beaufrand's journey from the depths of addiction and chaos to the path of optimal health and sobriety illuminates the transformative power of the Soberflex system. Born from a turbulent past marked by loss, substance abuse, and a relentless quest for sobriety, Kevin's story is a testament to resilience and the capacity for radical change.

EP 352: Horseman's Recovery Story
Friday Apr 05, 2024
Friday Apr 05, 2024
Host: Drifter
Guest: Horseman
Horseman is from the rural countryside located in the rainbow nation, South Africa. He has been married to the same beautiful girl, that still loves him, after more than forty four years. They have three grown up children, four grandchildren, a Labrador dog and a few chickens that scratch in the back yard.
He lost most of his hearing when he was five years old due to a freak accident at home. He experienced bullying and ridiculing as a young child because he attended a public school. His father encouraged him, due to these circumstances, to learn the martial art of karate, that resulted in him he being qualified as a young, teenage instructor, teaching others to fight. He can fortunately hear much better now, due to wireless technology for profound deafness.
Another hobby that shaped him as a young person was when he learned to ride horses. His IAS pseudonym is therefore based on his love and strong relationship with these special animals. He actually wanted to be an expert with animals like horses, but ended up as a specialist with digital machines. He was part of a musical family that helped him to become a proficient classic and blues guitar player - obviously he often turns the volume up, far too loud!
He started having drinking issues during his professional career as an international ICT Consultant. The corporate life, job pressure, travel, etc. caused him to gradually slip down the alcohol pitcher plant, while acting as a fully functional expert across the world. In spite of this he managed to protect his marriage but in the end he decided to quit his ICT career ambitions for the sake of his family.
Horseman is known for this motto: Love never fails 🌾
His life and recovery is based on Christian teachings - scriptures like 1 Corinthians 13:8 fascinated him. Horseman learned long ago that love is that one, most profound thing that can conquer any obstacle. So, although he admits that he made many mistakes he always practiced this motto to the best of his ability - both in his work and his personal life.
Finally, he is currently doing part time studying, in order to become a certified counselor / therapist. He is still an active member on the I Am Sober (IAS) App, paying back for everything he learned in that arena since 7th of April, 2020, when he joined. He has learned that the only person he can change, is himself.
"I just don't need this in my life anymore
and I want to try something new...."
-Thank you Drifter.

EP 350: Nancy's Recovery Story
Tuesday Mar 19, 2024
Tuesday Mar 19, 2024
Nancy Newton BioNancy was born in Houston, Texas, and was a Physical Therapist turned stay at home Mom who dabbled in her Catholic church Music Ministry for a time as she was raising her 3 children. When she returned to her job as a PT at the age of 46 after a 9-year hiatus, she began her long painful descent into the slow process of becoming addicted to alcohol. This descent included a resurgence of a food/exercise addiction that she had struggled with most of her life from the early teen years but was able to recover from when she found her way into the rooms of Overeaters Anonymous in her 30’s, her first exposure to a 12-step program. This progressed in her 50’s to more regular drinking, and by the time she was in her late 50’s and early 60’s, a full-on addiction to a daily intake of alcohol which often included a full bottle of wine or 2 very strong frozen margaritas from the local Mexican food restaurant, and perhaps some additional topping off to get through the day. She also relapsed into her binging/starving/overexercising addiction until she was 50+ pounds heavier and suffering from extreme depression, lack of motivation and the desire to socially isolate, inability to sleep and the need for increased anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medicines to cope. There were multiple attempts to quit alcohol and food abuse, trying therapy and even walking through the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous. These attempts were in vain until one day she discovered The Naked Mind book by Annie Grace. On August 4, 2022, she began her journey into sobriety. On the Naked Mind website she found the information that led her to the Thursday am early doors Sobertown Zoom meetings. (Thank you, Fluffy All Heart!!!) Getting out of isolation and reconnecting to others in those sessions allowed her to find the strength and courage to take the necessary steps to get sober. She now is 19 months sober and embarking on a new life after slowly beginning to implement the tools she found necessary to her sobriety. These tools include daily Yoga, meditation, inspirational music, reading, cardiovascular exercise, healthy eating, Sobertown Zoom meetings, and reestablishing or finding new ways to connect to others. These tools allow her to go through life more mindfully, cherishing the relationships between family and friends and understanding the real meaning and purpose for her life. In November, after a return home from a trip to Spain, she was painfully aware of her longstanding tendency to set goals and reach them while not at all being mindful or enjoying the process. It became a real source of frustration for her and the main topic of discussion in a therapy session. There, her therapist of many years, introduced her to Kirtana and the Deathbed song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1khh5AHacgUThis one song began some new insights into how she would begin to make the necessary changes in the last quarter of her life so that she would not miss out on any of the “holy” moments that give life meaning for her: Connection to others, Courage to step out of her comfort zones, Calmness and moving more slowly through her day, and following through on all Commitments she makes to others. This has become a daily practice as she starts each day. She hopes that her story of her journey will inspire others to hang in there through the process of becoming sober. Change can be slow, and it is so important to look at this process as an unfolding of possibilities that will continue to move in a forward direction, if you commit to staying on the path. It is worth every bit of grit and determination that is required. Nancy is retired, and currently lives with her wonderful husband of 40 years in McKinney Texas.

Saturday Mar 16, 2024
Saturday Mar 16, 2024
Host: Kevin Beaufrand
Life Story
Kevin Beaufrand's life story is a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity through resilience and transformation. Tragedy struck early when he lost his father at the age of 11, leading him into a dark period of panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. By 13, Kevin found temporary solace in alcohol, marking the start of an 18-year nightmare filled with lies, vomiting, self resentment, and substance abuse that included alcohol, weed, cocaine, and a battle with rhabdomyolysis due to a dangerous mix of overexercising, alcohol, and cocaine. Despite these challenges, including significant personal losses and a near-fatal car crash, Kevin's turning point came at 30 when he sought help and went to rehab. Although he faced relapse, it was at 31 that he found lasting sobriety.
Kevin's journey is not just about his battles with addiction but also about his profound personal growth and the discovery of his purpose. His transformation was fueled by a commitment to sobriety and health, leading him to not only reclaim his life but also to found Soberflex. This platform is Kevin's way of sharing his journey, health expertise, and the lessons learned, offering support and guidance to others facing similar struggles. His story is a testament to the power of embracing one's past to fuel a future filled with purpose, success, and well-being. Through Soberflex, Kevin aims to empower others in recovery, helping them develop repeatable strategies for long-term health and genuine success.

In this episode of Early Days, I'll be talking about cravings: what are they, what causes them, and what we can do to resist them. Please join me while I provide a few possibilities.

No two recovery journeys look the same, but one nearly universal truth is that connection with others in recovery can make the experience smoother, easier, and dare I say it, even fun! The goal of the Early Days podcast is to identify some of the common themes and issues that come up around early sobriety to provide a sense of connection, break down the walls of loneliness, demystify confusing topics and laugh about the outright silly ones! Together let's seek the comfort to be found in sharing the burdens we all bear during The Early Days.

Hi my name is Melissa Hubenak. I am a 41 year old mother of three amazing sons. I am also a widow. I began this recovery journey on June 28th of 2021. My childhood was full of trauma including physical mental emotional and sexual abuse. Both my parents were Alcoholic addicts. But I never thought that it was the reason I used drugs and alcohol. Growing up I partied because I thought it was fun. I loved experimenting and out drinking everyone at a party. I broke my back the summer before my senior year. That is how I learned about addiction from an addicts perspective. The best drug dealer I would ever know was my doctor. My addiction would follow me overseas where by the age of 21 I was prescribed fentanyl patches and oxycontin. My first blessing came in the form of a felony charge. The judge sentenced me to probation and a methadone maintenance clinic. This would not be the first time my felonies would turn into a blessing because of an Angel disguised as a judge. I eventually married the love of my life. We had three beautiful boys. That maintenance program gave the ability to have a normal life. Things were great until my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer. In 2018 he passed away. And two weeks later I lost my cousin to murder by fentanyl. I died with them. The stay at home wife and mother became a homeless, drug addicted felon. Today I have a home, a car, a job, and most importantly my children back. I couldn’t be more grateful. Today I have Faith that is unshakable because of a God that is all powerful. Desperation led me to surrender. God met me where I was at. He placed angels all around me. I tell people all the time, “I am living in the midst of prayers answered and dreams come true. I have such a beautiful life.” I am lucky enough to have a job helping others working in mental health. I recently finished training to become a recovery coach. Which I can't wait to apply to my goals of helping those seeking to restore their life. The biggest gift I have been given is the opportunity to open a sober living with my best friend as my partner. We were given two properties and are building a network of resources to offer the best support possible for the persons that come to us for help. I had no idea that day, in summer of 2021, would lead me on an adventure like this. The good times are amazing and the bad times just aren’t as bad. Today I live in the moment. Embrace every opportunity. Love Hard. Fight Hard. And I have never been so High. I hope you have a GREAT DAY ON PURPOSE. FRESH BLESSING. MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT. WE DO RECOVER!!

Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Host: Drifter
Guest: Michal aka MMC13
Michal aka MMC13 lives in Albuquerque New Mexico with her houseful of 4-legged family. She's an avid animal rescuer and transport driver. Her history with addiction started in her early teens, and her recovery journey began in her late 20s. She's a firm believer that connection beats addiction, there's no such thing as a one size fits all recovery program, and that recovery is not linear, and she strives to spread those messages to anyone who may benefit from hearing them.
Podcast summary: Michal's recovery journey has not been linear, and although she's been in and around recovery for 16 years, she's had some detours along the way. In this episode, Michal aka MMC13 and Drifter dive into some of the things that may push a person with extensive consecutive sobriety to decide to try drinking again. Michal shares about the headspace she was in, some of the triggers she faced, and what she's trying to do differently this time. This is the pilot episode in an ongoing series which will follow Michal's journey and specifically examine the struggles and successes she experiences along the way.

My name is Pollya. 31/2 years ago, I opened the door to a new and better life, a sober life. During these last 3 1/2 years I have learnt to manage my life and deal with my emotions on a daily basis without alcohol but with the loving and supportive sober communities in IAS and Sobertown. Two years into my sobriety, I lost my husband of 19 years Daniel. I have navigated the hard journey of grief without my crutch, alcohol, so honoring his memory. I have learned that life after alcohol is filled with memorable moments. Moments I remember and take great joy in. I have traveled extensively to Australia, Alaska, various parts of the USA smiling all the while. I recently moved from the USA back to the UK and making yet another life for myself. My life is full of family, sober friends, future travel plans and just the sheer joy of waking up in a state of freedom.
FU alcohol and No Sippy No slippy. I need to live!!

EP 335: Kevin Beaufrand’s Recovery Story
Friday Nov 24, 2023
Friday Nov 24, 2023
Host: Drifter
Guest: Kevin Beaufrand
I grew up in the Caribbean on the French island of Martinique. I have always been athletic, and for the most part, I had a wonderful childhood playing outside with my friends, climbing trees, and playing hide and seek!
All this took a radical turn when my father suddenly died in a motorcycle accident in 1999. I was only 11 years old back then. He and I were very close, and I desperately needed a father figure at that age, so this was extremely difficult.
I am the youngest of 3 brothers. Both my brothers were living on another island at the time, which meant it was just my mother and I in the house. My mother was very strong; she had to be. I did my best to be a good supportive son, and things went relatively well (as well as can be after suddenly losing your dad) until the age of 13 years old when I discovered alcohol. On that day, I knew right away that something was not right; alcohol made me feel good, way too good. That is when things took a turn for the worse.
I did not fully realize it back then, but that day when I had my first sip of alcohol would trigger a chaotic slippery slope of a long nightmare. For the next 18 years, I would try again and again to quit, only to relapse, to try to quit again, and again and again… between the denial I was in and the amazingly strong grip alcohol had on me, I felt for the longest time as if I would never be able to find long-lasting sobriety. That is until I found my calling to help others!
By May 2019 (when I had my last drink), I had been a personal trainer for 6 years. Those 6 years were some of the hardest. As I descended deeper into my addiction while simultaneously preaching health to my clients, I was a fraud and felt like one. If I wanted to help others, I had to help myself first and foremost!
That’s when I knew enough was enough. I had to make a change.
You see, up until now, I had only used exercise to get healthy, which is just one of the health pillars (foundation). The five health pillars are nutrition, movement (exercise), mindset, sleep, and community. If any of those are not cherished, you can rest assured that you will not thrive. So I put all the chances on my side this time and cherished my health as a whole! I adopted a new mindset, started eating better, exercising, sleeping better, and perhaps more importantly, packed all my belongings, changed my phone number, and moved to North Carolina (from Florida).
I am sure you heard this saying before: “you are who your friends are,” and that is true, especially in addiction. I needed new friends and a new environment if I wanted long-lasting sobriety.
With my newfound health commitment and the support of my wonderful wife and friends, I am approaching 5 years of sobriety. Since then, on top of being a personal trainer, I have decided to become a nutritionist, a sobriety coach, and a mindset coach in order to help my clients cherish all 5 health pillars so they can have lifelong results. Today, I am obsessed with helping my clients find new ways to improve mentally, physically, and spiritually one day at a time.
I never thought in my life that I would find my passion, let alone my purpose. But here it is: my purpose is to help and guide others who are struggling with addiction by eliminating limiting beliefs, and making the most appropriate health choices in order for them to find long-lasting sobriety and unlock their full potential.
We only have one life, and our health is our most precious gift; we must cherish it!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is not my intention to be dark in the description of my life; it just so happens that for 20 years, my life was just that dark. It has been the opposite of a smooth road. I cannot possibly list all of the bumps and obstacles I encountered during my 18 years binge; this will have to be for one of the future books I will write.
So instead, I will leave you with some major timelines of obstacles:
11 years old: I lost my dad tragically and suddenly (he was gone in a few hours, and I did not have time to say goodbye).
12 years old: Started having major panic attacks and suicidal thoughts, first time seeing therapist (first of many).
13 years old: Found alcohol; this started the 18 years of a nightmare filled with lies, deception, puking, and worrying that today may be my last.
17 years old: I lost my best friend tragically and suddenly in a boating accident.
18 years old: Major car crash onto incoming traffic (lost driver’s license after only 3 weeks having it and nearly killed someone).
19 years old: Started acne treatment in France, went terrible, and triggered suicidal thoughts (had to stop treatment early).
20 years old: Moved to Florida and started experimenting with harder drugs.
24 years old: 4 days in hospital due to rhabdomyolysis (deadly condition due to excessive workout and alcohol & cocaine overdose).
30 years old: Went to rehab for 6 weeks but relapsed 6 months later.
31 years old: Clean and sober for good.
36 years old (TODAY): On a mission to help as many people as possible find sobriety and avoid the mistakes I made by caring for their bodies and mind as a whole, loving themselves, and living life to the fullest.

Bio:
Database Programmer/Data Scientist by day. Husband, Father, Musician, Photographer, Artist, Internet DJ, Astrologer, Designer and Writer by night.
Born and raised in Iowa, moved to Illinois in the 80s to go to DeVry. That’s when the drinking started. You go to college; you hang out with certain people and you get drunk and stoned. Plain and simple. We had 4 roommates when we stayed in DeVry Housing back then. We had one drug dealer move in when one would move out. If it wasn’t free, it was cheap. Most of them were old enough to get us booze as well.
I’ve been in various heavy metal bands since high school in the late 70s, all the way up till 2014. Bass, Keyboards, Singing and Guitar. Many drunken blacked out nights back then. In the early 90s I quit drinking as much, but when I got divorced from my first marriage, I was alone and I didn’t like being alone with myself, so I turned to wine. 2 to 3 bottles a day. I was an independent IT consultant at the time and always stressed out. So, you can imagine how sloshed I get and blackout. I quit cold turkey in 1995 when I joined a Blues Brothers act right after my father died from pancreatic cancer. I did that for 5 years and had heart palpitations the last night I was dancing. I was Jake. I smoked like Jake. 2 packs of Marlboro Reds a day, then 2 packs of American Spirits. I jumped back into a band in 2002 with a friend from work. The drinking and the smoking came back at that time.
In 2005, I met my wife. I stopped drinking. I wanted to set an example for her boys. They were 10 and 13 and soon to become my stepsons. Although I always refer to them as my sons, because their dad was not present in their lives as much. We married in 2006 and moved into a rental house in 2008. Right before we moved into that house, we both quit smoking and haven’t had a cigarette since June 28th, 2008. At that time, I introduced my wife to wine, and as we now say, the rest is history. We crept up in volume and quantity over the years. I got to the point where before the pandemic I was drinking 2 to 2 ½ bottles of wine a night. When the pandemic hit, everything was uncertain, my drinking got even worse. I could polish off an entire Black Box of Pinot Noir in one night. That’s 4 bottles of wine. Blackouts returned. Falling out of bed and hitting my head on the nightstand or falling out of my chair at my desk while I was doing radio shows, was a common occurrence.
I joined IAS in 2022 to get sober. I hit that reset button like a snooze alarm almost daily if not weekly. I was proud of myself that I hit 20 days and then relapsed that night. Finally, my health was taking the worst hit in March of 2023 and I set my quit day on the first day of Spring 3/20/2023. This time I leaned into the community on IAS, where I found out about Sobertown Podcast. I started to dig around the website and found Rewired. I had already done a 30-day stint (that was part of the 20 days) with This Naked Mind back in 2022. Rewired; that was different. This was my jam and I felt at home. Sobertown had a Zoom meeting that was based on Erica Spiegelman’s book, so I jumped on one, one day and felt right at home.
I’m over 200+ days now. I feel better than I’ve felt in years and I’m going after goals that I threw away years ago. I’m dropping weight (down from 354 pounds to 315 pound in six months), I’m more focused and I feel more present every day. I leaned into Zoom, IAS, Discord and Telegram communities and it feels awesome to be able to help when I can. Sobertown Podcast has been an excellent source for tools that helped me with working my own personal program, one day at a time. I’m not an AA person, but I do not judge people who are following that path. This site has opened my eyes to other possibilities, and I am so grateful they are here.
