About Sobertown
Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety.
We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection.
Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual.
But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side.
We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction.

Hi my name is Melissa Hubenak. I am a 41 year old mother of three amazing sons. I am also a widow. I began this recovery journey on June 28th of 2021. My childhood was full of trauma including physical mental emotional and sexual abuse. Both my parents were Alcoholic addicts. But I never thought that it was the reason I used drugs and alcohol. Growing up I partied because I thought it was fun. I loved experimenting and out drinking everyone at a party. I broke my back the summer before my senior year. That is how I learned about addiction from an addicts perspective. The best drug dealer I would ever know was my doctor. My addiction would follow me overseas where by the age of 21 I was prescribed fentanyl patches and oxycontin. My first blessing came in the form of a felony charge. The judge sentenced me to probation and a methadone maintenance clinic. This would not be the first time my felonies would turn into a blessing because of an Angel disguised as a judge. I eventually married the love of my life. We had three beautiful boys. That maintenance program gave the ability to have a normal life. Things were great until my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer. In 2018 he passed away. And two weeks later I lost my cousin to murder by fentanyl. I died with them. The stay at home wife and mother became a homeless, drug addicted felon. Today I have a home, a car, a job, and most importantly my children back. I couldn’t be more grateful. Today I have Faith that is unshakable because of a God that is all powerful. Desperation led me to surrender. God met me where I was at. He placed angels all around me. I tell people all the time, “I am living in the midst of prayers answered and dreams come true. I have such a beautiful life.” I am lucky enough to have a job helping others working in mental health. I recently finished training to become a recovery coach. Which I can't wait to apply to my goals of helping those seeking to restore their life. The biggest gift I have been given is the opportunity to open a sober living with my best friend as my partner. We were given two properties and are building a network of resources to offer the best support possible for the persons that come to us for help. I had no idea that day, in summer of 2021, would lead me on an adventure like this. The good times are amazing and the bad times just aren’t as bad. Today I live in the moment. Embrace every opportunity. Love Hard. Fight Hard. And I have never been so High. I hope you have a GREAT DAY ON PURPOSE. FRESH BLESSING. MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT. WE DO RECOVER!!

EP 338: Day 25 With Michal aka MMC13
Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Host: Drifter
Guest: Michal aka MMC13
Michal aka MMC13 lives in Albuquerque New Mexico with her houseful of 4-legged family. She's an avid animal rescuer and transport driver. Her history with addiction started in her early teens, and her recovery journey began in her late 20s. She's a firm believer that connection beats addiction, there's no such thing as a one size fits all recovery program, and that recovery is not linear, and she strives to spread those messages to anyone who may benefit from hearing them.
Podcast summary: Michal's recovery journey has not been linear, and although she's been in and around recovery for 16 years, she's had some detours along the way. In this episode, Michal aka MMC13 and Drifter dive into some of the things that may push a person with extensive consecutive sobriety to decide to try drinking again. Michal shares about the headspace she was in, some of the triggers she faced, and what she's trying to do differently this time. This is the pilot episode in an ongoing series which will follow Michal's journey and specifically examine the struggles and successes she experiences along the way.

My name is Pollya. 31/2 years ago, I opened the door to a new and better life, a sober life. During these last 3 1/2 years I have learnt to manage my life and deal with my emotions on a daily basis without alcohol but with the loving and supportive sober communities in IAS and Sobertown. Two years into my sobriety, I lost my husband of 19 years Daniel. I have navigated the hard journey of grief without my crutch, alcohol, so honoring his memory. I have learned that life after alcohol is filled with memorable moments. Moments I remember and take great joy in. I have traveled extensively to Australia, Alaska, various parts of the USA smiling all the while. I recently moved from the USA back to the UK and making yet another life for myself. My life is full of family, sober friends, future travel plans and just the sheer joy of waking up in a state of freedom.

EP 335: Kevin Beaufrand’s Recovery Story
Friday Nov 24, 2023
Friday Nov 24, 2023
Host: Drifter
Guest: Kevin Beaufrand
I grew up in the Caribbean on the French island of Martinique. I have always been athletic, and for the most part, I had a wonderful childhood playing outside with my friends, climbing trees, and playing hide and seek!
All this took a radical turn when my father suddenly died in a motorcycle accident in 1999. I was only 11 years old back then. He and I were very close, and I desperately needed a father figure at that age, so this was extremely difficult.
I am the youngest of 3 brothers. Both my brothers were living on another island at the time, which meant it was just my mother and I in the house. My mother was very strong; she had to be. I did my best to be a good supportive son, and things went relatively well (as well as can be after suddenly losing your dad) until the age of 13 years old when I discovered alcohol. On that day, I knew right away that something was not right; alcohol made me feel good, way too good. That is when things took a turn for the worse.
I did not fully realize it back then, but that day when I had my first sip of alcohol would trigger a chaotic slippery slope of a long nightmare. For the next 18 years, I would try again and again to quit, only to relapse, to try to quit again, and again and again… between the denial I was in and the amazingly strong grip alcohol had on me, I felt for the longest time as if I would never be able to find long-lasting sobriety. That is until I found my calling to help others!
By May 2019 (when I had my last drink), I had been a personal trainer for 6 years. Those 6 years were some of the hardest. As I descended deeper into my addiction while simultaneously preaching health to my clients, I was a fraud and felt like one. If I wanted to help others, I had to help myself first and foremost!
That’s when I knew enough was enough. I had to make a change.
You see, up until now, I had only used exercise to get healthy, which is just one of the health pillars (foundation). The five health pillars are nutrition, movement (exercise), mindset, sleep, and community. If any of those are not cherished, you can rest assured that you will not thrive. So I put all the chances on my side this time and cherished my health as a whole! I adopted a new mindset, started eating better, exercising, sleeping better, and perhaps more importantly, packed all my belongings, changed my phone number, and moved to North Carolina (from Florida).
I am sure you heard this saying before: “you are who your friends are,” and that is true, especially in addiction. I needed new friends and a new environment if I wanted long-lasting sobriety.
With my newfound health commitment and the support of my wonderful wife and friends, I am approaching 5 years of sobriety. Since then, on top of being a personal trainer, I have decided to become a nutritionist, a sobriety coach, and a mindset coach in order to help my clients cherish all 5 health pillars so they can have lifelong results. Today, I am obsessed with helping my clients find new ways to improve mentally, physically, and spiritually one day at a time.
I never thought in my life that I would find my passion, let alone my purpose. But here it is: my purpose is to help and guide others who are struggling with addiction by eliminating limiting beliefs, and making the most appropriate health choices in order for them to find long-lasting sobriety and unlock their full potential.
We only have one life, and our health is our most precious gift; we must cherish it!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is not my intention to be dark in the description of my life; it just so happens that for 20 years, my life was just that dark. It has been the opposite of a smooth road. I cannot possibly list all of the bumps and obstacles I encountered during my 18 years binge; this will have to be for one of the future books I will write.
So instead, I will leave you with some major timelines of obstacles:
11 years old: I lost my dad tragically and suddenly (he was gone in a few hours, and I did not have time to say goodbye).
12 years old: Started having major panic attacks and suicidal thoughts, first time seeing therapist (first of many).
13 years old: Found alcohol; this started the 18 years of a nightmare filled with lies, deception, puking, and worrying that today may be my last.
17 years old: I lost my best friend tragically and suddenly in a boating accident.
18 years old: Major car crash onto incoming traffic (lost driver’s license after only 3 weeks having it and nearly killed someone).
19 years old: Started acne treatment in France, went terrible, and triggered suicidal thoughts (had to stop treatment early).
20 years old: Moved to Florida and started experimenting with harder drugs.
24 years old: 4 days in hospital due to rhabdomyolysis (deadly condition due to excessive workout and alcohol & cocaine overdose).
30 years old: Went to rehab for 6 weeks but relapsed 6 months later.
31 years old: Clean and sober for good.
36 years old (TODAY): On a mission to help as many people as possible find sobriety and avoid the mistakes I made by caring for their bodies and mind as a whole, loving themselves, and living life to the fullest.

Bio:
Database Programmer/Data Scientist by day. Husband, Father, Musician, Photographer, Artist, Internet DJ, Astrologer, Designer and Writer by night.
Born and raised in Iowa, moved to Illinois in the 80s to go to DeVry. That’s when the drinking started. You go to college; you hang out with certain people and you get drunk and stoned. Plain and simple. We had 4 roommates when we stayed in DeVry Housing back then. We had one drug dealer move in when one would move out. If it wasn’t free, it was cheap. Most of them were old enough to get us booze as well.
I’ve been in various heavy metal bands since high school in the late 70s, all the way up till 2014. Bass, Keyboards, Singing and Guitar. Many drunken blacked out nights back then. In the early 90s I quit drinking as much, but when I got divorced from my first marriage, I was alone and I didn’t like being alone with myself, so I turned to wine. 2 to 3 bottles a day. I was an independent IT consultant at the time and always stressed out. So, you can imagine how sloshed I get and blackout. I quit cold turkey in 1995 when I joined a Blues Brothers act right after my father died from pancreatic cancer. I did that for 5 years and had heart palpitations the last night I was dancing. I was Jake. I smoked like Jake. 2 packs of Marlboro Reds a day, then 2 packs of American Spirits. I jumped back into a band in 2002 with a friend from work. The drinking and the smoking came back at that time.
In 2005, I met my wife. I stopped drinking. I wanted to set an example for her boys. They were 10 and 13 and soon to become my stepsons. Although I always refer to them as my sons, because their dad was not present in their lives as much. We married in 2006 and moved into a rental house in 2008. Right before we moved into that house, we both quit smoking and haven’t had a cigarette since June 28th, 2008. At that time, I introduced my wife to wine, and as we now say, the rest is history. We crept up in volume and quantity over the years. I got to the point where before the pandemic I was drinking 2 to 2 ½ bottles of wine a night. When the pandemic hit, everything was uncertain, my drinking got even worse. I could polish off an entire Black Box of Pinot Noir in one night. That’s 4 bottles of wine. Blackouts returned. Falling out of bed and hitting my head on the nightstand or falling out of my chair at my desk while I was doing radio shows, was a common occurrence.
I joined IAS in 2022 to get sober. I hit that reset button like a snooze alarm almost daily if not weekly. I was proud of myself that I hit 20 days and then relapsed that night. Finally, my health was taking the worst hit in March of 2023 and I set my quit day on the first day of Spring 3/20/2023. This time I leaned into the community on IAS, where I found out about Sobertown Podcast. I started to dig around the website and found Rewired. I had already done a 30-day stint (that was part of the 20 days) with This Naked Mind back in 2022. Rewired; that was different. This was my jam and I felt at home. Sobertown had a Zoom meeting that was based on Erica Spiegelman’s book, so I jumped on one, one day and felt right at home.
I’m over 200+ days now. I feel better than I’ve felt in years and I’m going after goals that I threw away years ago. I’m dropping weight (down from 354 pounds to 315 pound in six months), I’m more focused and I feel more present every day. I leaned into Zoom, IAS, Discord and Telegram communities and it feels awesome to be able to help when I can. Sobertown Podcast has been an excellent source for tools that helped me with working my own personal program, one day at a time. I’m not an AA person, but I do not judge people who are following that path. This site has opened my eyes to other possibilities, and I am so grateful they are here.

My name is Samantha Brantley I am 38 and mother of 4 wonderful kids and a very special granddaughter, Shiloh. My addiction started in my early 20s and I have been clean for over 5 years. So when I went through addiction my small, rural community had no resources. Since being clean I have been advocating to get resources there for others that are struggling. I started a recovery meeting last year that is growing. Probation officers and the courts are sending people to our meeting. It seems so small but being able to sign someone's meeting sheet, at a meeting I started, is huge to me. I also have been on the Union County ICARE Board for about a year. ICARE is a prevention coalition that does lots of great things in the schools in my area as well as in the community. I have also been working hand in hand with the misdemeanor court system in my county to launch a recovery court there. The goal of this is to offer resources and programs, with structure, early on with the hope of helping citizens find recovery and life worth living before it feels too late. We also hope this will help break stigma and prevent those struggling from reaching even worse felony convictions. My goal is to spread hope anywhere I can by being living proof that WE DO RECOVER. And we should do it LOUDLY!
Samantha, I'm so grateful to have sat with you as you shared your recovery story! I'm so grateful to know you and Chris and being able to witness in person all you're doing for our community as you help others fight their way out of the trenches of addiction! You, Chris, your team and everyone coming together is a huge inspiration to us all!! You are definitely an amazing example of someone turning their life around!!

EP 332: From Addiction to Attraction: A Road to Recovery
Wednesday Nov 08, 2023
Wednesday Nov 08, 2023
Host: Drifter
Guest: Piere Ingram
How do you overcome a rough life after being dealt a bad hand?
Piere Ingram spent years trying to figure this out. He was trapped, with no clear escape. Abused as a child, Piere rebelled during his teenage years. He was labeled a troubled teen and turned to the only way out he could find: a life filled with addictions. It is said taking the easy way can become the path to self-destruction. Piere learned this the hard way. The downward spiral threatened to destroy him.
Piere plunged headfirst down the rabbit hole and would have been consumed if not for one simple thing that intervened and, appropriately, save his life. Piere discovered God and the power of faith. From Addiction to Attraction: A Road To Recovery is his testament. Emotionally charged and often difficult to swallow, Piere lays his life bare for all to witness.Far more than a somber tale, Piere’s story also provides the tools necessary for those grappling with addictions to break free and reclaim their lives. Ultimately you are the only one responsible for who you are and what you can become. By breaking the shackles of addiction you are not only freeing yourself to a better world, you are beginning the healing process and restoring balance. From Addiction to Attraction is powerful and driven. It is a journey too many of us have taken and many more have yet to begin. Perhaps these words, this brutal honesty, will help some see the light and begin the long road to recovery and a new dawn. From Addiction to Attraction is the true story of how Piere Ingram overcame a hard start to his life and, through the discovery of faith, turned everything around to become a successful, faithful man. An emotional rollercoaster, this memoir is an inspiration for all who are undergoing similar circumstances.
Piere was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His first exposure to poetry was through Dr. Suess books when he was very young. Piere loved the rhythm, rhymes, and wordplay of poetry. Reading and writing poetry became a way for Piere to escape from his problems and release his emotions.
I'd love to say that when I was addicted to drugs, alcohol, negative environments, and people that it changed overnight. You know, that an inspirational person came into my life and I was changed forever. But to be honest, it was neither that easy nor that smooth. I had to go through a lot of tough times. I experienced a lot of growth, from having both my parents die within six months, and then meeting many people who affected my way of thinking and feeling.
Before, I was so addicted to searching for things that didn't benefit me. I was looking to get "my next fix". I was getting love in the wrong places, and in the long run, I ended up breaking down to such a low point in my life. So low, that I had no choice but to change the way that I was doing things if I was going to survive.
One thing that hit me after my mom died was remembering her words, "Piere, you only have one life to live, so you better get this right".
Her words forced me to look within myself and come to terms with the bad choices I was making. I want to make her proud.
Poetry is my passion and I love to share my story through my poems to inspire others. If I can change, so can you! I enjoy interacting with my readers.

EP 330: Five Things To Know Before You Get Sober With Nicolas Morales
Monday Oct 23, 2023
Monday Oct 23, 2023
Host: Michal Charles aka MMC13
Guest: Nicolas Morales
Five Things To Know Before You Get Sober
This book describes five elements of recovery that have been learned through experience. It explains raw realities that may not be covered in counseling, therapy, or treatment facilities. It allows the reader to see into these elements and prepare for them so the path to recovery may be accomplished with less roadblocks. It can also be used as a tool for individuals who are dancing around the idea of recovery. Through lived experience of addiction to opiates and alcohol, these five elements were the most shocking, rough, and problematic to a successful recovery. Addiction has no concern for the individual it plagues. The battle against it is unique to each person. These elements are generic in nature with the hope the reader will apply the topics to their own struggles.
Nico Morales: Transforming Lives Through Resilience and Purpose
Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nico Morales embodies the spirit of the Duke City. As a third-generation resident, he takes immense pride in his roots and the vibrant community that shaped him. Nico's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and personal growth, as he overcame significant challenges to emerge as an author, graduate, and successful business owner.
Nico's upbringing was influenced by his parents, who instilled in him the values of hard work and compassion. His father, a skilled technician in the technology sector, and his angelic mother, who dedicated herself to social work, provided Nico with a solid foundation. Despite their best efforts, Nico faced early hardships that left lasting imprints on his worldview.
Throughout his childhood, Nico grappled with feelings of abandonment and rejection. These emotions were compounded by traumatic experiences, leading him to develop a skewed perspective on family and belonging. By the age of fourteen, Nico believed he was capable of living independently and contemplated dropping out of school to join the workforce. It was his mother's guidance and the prospect of pursuing his passion for wrestling that redirected his path back to education.
Understanding the importance of financial independence, Nico devised alternative ways to earn money during the school year. Initially selling single prime times (loose cigarettes), he later transitioned into the cannabis trade. In his junior year of high school, Nico recognized the lucrative potential in the emerging market of prescription pills. However, his involvement took a dangerous turn when he succumbed to the temptations of substance abuse.
Dependent on OxyContin, Nico faced a critical crossroad when the availability of the drug diminished. Faced with limited options, he turned to heroin as a means of escape. By the time he reached his twenties, Nico found himself living in his truck, ensnared in a cycle of desperation. It was this distress that ultimately compelled him to break free from opioid addiction, although he did so without seeking professional help to address the underlying issues.
Reintegrating into his family's support system, Nico sought solace in excessive alcohol consumption, which strained relationships and led to his eventual expulsion from their homes. This rejection only amplified his feelings of isolation. Rock bottom arrived when Nico found himself living in a dilapidated building, broken physically, mentally, and spiritually. Despite the challenges, he recognized a higher purpose and chose to embark on a spiritual journey of healing.
Through introspection and self-study, Nico gained valuable insights into his thoughts, emotions, and actions. This newfound awareness led to transformative changes in his life and propelled him toward serving others on their own paths of self-discovery. Fueling his purpose, Nico authored the book "Five Things to Know Before You Get Sober," sharing his experiences and providing guidance to those seeking a similar path of personal growth.
Driven by his commitment to serve others, Nico pursued higher education with unwavering determination. He earned a bachelor's degree with honors, solidifying his academic achievements. Today, Nico is the proud founder of No Halo, a personal and professional development services company. The name reflects his belief that nobody is born an angel, but everyone has the capacity to improve themselves each day.
Nico Morales stands as a living testament to the power of resilience, determination, and personal growth. His life experiences have shaped his mission to inspire others to discover their purpose, navigate life's challenges, and embrace imperfections. Through his work, Nico embodies the transformative journey from adversity to empowerment, reminding us all that it is never too late to change our lives for the better.

Ericaspiegelman.com
A counselor at one of the most innovative and renowned drug and alcohol treatment centers in the world introduces an empowering approach to addiction recovery that addresses the whole self—mind, body, and spiritThis “useful and practical perspective on what you can do to recover from [addiction]” can replace or supplement 12-step programs—at any stage in your recovery (Allen Berger, Ph.D., author of 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery) Rewired is a new, breakthrough approach to fighting addiction and self-damaging behavior by acknowledging our personal power to bring ourselves back from the brink. Centered on the concept of self-actualization, Rewired will guide you towards not only physical sobriety, but a mental, emotional, and spiritual sobriety by learning to identify key principles within yourself, including authenticity, honesty, gratitude, and understanding a need for solitude. Rewired addresses the whole self; just as addiction affects every part of one’s life, so too must its treatment. By helping us to build a healthy space to support our own recovery, we can rewrite the negative behaviors that result in addiction. Usable in conjunction with or in place of 12-step programs, Rewired allows for a more holistic approach, helping to create a personalized treatment plan that is right for you. Each section in Rewired includes: • Personal anecdotes from the author’s own struggles with alcoholism and addiction• Inspiring true success stories of patients overcoming their addictions• Questions to engage you into finding what is missing from your recovery• Positive affirmations and intentions to guide and motivate With all the variables, both physical and emotional, that play into overcoming addiction, Rewiredenables us to stay strong and positive as we progress on the path to recovery. Rewired teaches patience and compassion, the two cornerstones of a new, humanist approach to curing addiction. Remember, addicts are not broken people that need to be fixed—they just have a few crossed wires.

EP 323: Yusuf aka Advancing’s Recovery Story
Sunday Sep 03, 2023
Sunday Sep 03, 2023
Host: Drifter
Guest: Yusuf aka Advancing
My name is Yusuf Sharif Wilson (Advancing . . . on the I am Sober App) and I have been alcohol-free for 6 months (the recording of this conversation actually took place on my 6 month anniversary✨).
Where to begin . . . This alcohol-free journey has been one of the most significant and important experiences I’ve had in my life. While my entry-point was seemingly random (that said, I don’t believe in coincidence), the process has taken on a power and impacted my path forward in ways that I could never have imagined this time last year.
I was fortunate to come across the I Am Sober community and have been afforded access to an incredible ecosystem that has contributed greatly to my ongoing evolution. I now am committed to similarly serve others as I have and continue to be served.
I accepted and allowed my relationship with alcohol to rob me of health, wealth, vitality, clarity, focus, and life. While I can’t change the impact of the choices I’ve made in the past, my commitment to being a part of assisting others in their respective relationships with substances is certain.
Immense gratitude to Drifter and the team at Sobertown Podcast for all of their incredible efforts and work! Thank you for being such phenomenal examples and showing the way . . . 🙏🏾✨
