About Sobertown
Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety.
We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection.
Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual.
But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side.
We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction.

EP 299: Brian aka BAwesome’s Recovery Story
Thursday Apr 20, 2023
Thursday Apr 20, 2023
Born and raised in central Pennsylvania and currently residing in northern New Jersey, Brian learned to binge-drink in the US Army way back in 1995 and has had a tumultuous relationship with alcohol ever since. He began his quest for sobriety in June 2015 following a regrettable drunken wakeup call and promptly stayed alcohol-free for four and a half years. Like many, however, his sober road has been anything but linear, and since he made a fateful decision to re-introduce alcohol into his life in late 2019, he's grappled with on-again/off-again stretches of trying to quit vs. drinking to excess. More recently, and due in no small part to alcohol, he hit a rock bottom that included both a suicide attempt and the end of his almost 14-year marriage. But this is a story with a happy ending. In the months that have followed the rock bottom, Brian has reinvented his commitment to sobriety in a way that has him excited about the future. Brian is a heart-on-his-sleeve kinda guy who, in addition to fighting for sobriety, enjoys exercising, meditating, being outdoors, reading, writing, vegging out in front of the TV, and spending time with his two beautiful daughters.

EP 298: ZERO PROOF EXPERIENCES - “Sober in the City”
Friday Apr 07, 2023
Friday Apr 07, 2023
Host: Viv, aka Sober_iThrive
Guests: Susie Streelman, Founder Zeroproof Experiences and Peggi Cooney, Chief Connection Officer, Zeroproof Experiences.
Sober in the City hits the East Coast this Sept 8-10 in Portland, Maine! Following four previous experiences held in Long Beach, Sacramento, Austin and Palm Springs, Sober in the City has turned into a nationwide movement where people can experience a luxury social event with everything but the buzz. Whether going out on the town for dinner, a movie, live music, or just catching up with friends – you know that none of it requires alcohol. Sober in the City shows attendees exactly what an alcohol free gathering feels like -- MAGIC.
Susie:
Former drinker of White Zin, Chardonnay, Red Blends and Sauvignon Blanc.
Currently standing over here, waving my arms. Look! Alcohol Free! It’s super fun over here!
She now collaborates with others to create experiences where connections are virtually guaranteed. You’ll probably forget alcohol wasn’t invited after attending a Sober in the City experience but will likely walk away feeling empowered in your alcohol free lifestyle!
Susie has two twenty something boys, and loves, golf, yoga and travel She ives in Long Beach with her husband of 31 years.
Peggi:
All of my personality tests indicate that I am an influencer who always looks for ways to motivate people and drive enthusiasm! Susie is my perfect partner in this.
Giving up alcohol in 2019 gave me the life I didn’t know I wanted and a community I didn’t know I needed. As my ZPE title suggests, I love meeting and connecting with all people sober or sober curious who seek social interaction on a whole new level. In other words, I revel in showing people a good time and being the catalyst for new friendships.
Since 2019, I have made living an alcohol-free life my priority. In fact, in 2021, I wrote a book about it: “This Side of Alcohol.” I bring facilitation skills from my job as a social work instructor for a local university. ZPE/Sober in the City and Susie check all the boxes for me. I know they will for you too.

EP 297: A Family’s Addiction: A Journey Through a Mother’s Heart
Tuesday Apr 04, 2023
Tuesday Apr 04, 2023
Host: Viv, aka Sober_iThrive
Guest: Ana Lozano Harmon
A Family's Addiction: A Journey Through a Mother's Heart, written by Ana Lozano Harmon, is a powerful memoir that follows a mother as she deals with her son’s addiction. Through her experiences, Ana discovers the struggles as a minority from an immigrant background and she becomes an advocate for change. With unwavering love and determination, Ana shows the power of resilience and survival. This inspiring and heartwarming story is a reminder that a whole family can support one another with faith that can help conquer even the most difficult of challenges.
Addiction rushes into a person’s life like a Tsunami. Slow at first, seemingly out of sight, trickling in, until it crashes ashore— leaving devastation in its wake. Drugs and alcohol can wreak havoc, destroying everything—and everyone in its path. Yet, Ana Lozano Harmon, her son Anthony, and her entire family endured the pain, tears, and tragedy to tell the tale. This is the story of survival, of drug and alcohol addiction, through the strength of a mother’s love and with a family who pulled together unconditionally—to save one of their own. A mother’s love for a child is everlasting, yet, facing addiction, can place a soul-wrenching strain on a mother’s heart, pushing it beyond normal limits. Ana’s situation became desperate in trying to help her son. Yet each day, the pain pushed her closer to the edge, almost beyond reach. Maybe you are here in desperate need, filled with despair, and a driving desire to understand what to do?… Is this you? About the author, Ana Lozano Harmon enjoys family gatherings at home believes togetherness keeps unity within the family circle. A Family’s Addiction is her first published book. Ana is retired from NBC/Telemundo TV stations where she took pride in helping fellow co-workers enjoy their time with family. Ana says, “I never believed that I could be an author of a book, but having faith and praying before starting each page, gave me the inspiration to share my life, pain, hardship, and triumph within my journey. And the best of all is this book allowed me to share with you.” This book is dedicated to all those suffering addicts, recovered addicts, parents of addicts.

EP 294: Swim Tuff: How I Swam My Way Out of A Bottle
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Ben Tuff grew up splitting his time between Atlanta, GA and Jamestown, RI. He attended Colby College where he met his now wife, Gretchen and treasured his times working at a sailing instructor and boat captain in the British Virgin Islands. Between Jamestown and the BVI, Ben developed a lifelong appreciation for the ocean. Ben is a lifelong educator and has had the privilege of working with hundreds of boarding students from across the world. In 2012, Ben made the life-altering decision to break free of the hold that the addiction to alcohol had on him. Despite not knowing how to swim, the sport of triathlon arrived quickly in his life. After seven years of competitive triathlon, Ben made the switch to marathon swimming. After many crossings from Newport, RI to Jamestown, RI on Save the Bay Swims, Ben throttled it up with the 12.5 Mile FKCC Swim Around Key West. After that, he couldn’t stop and completed a 21-mile swim around Jamestown, a 19-mile swim from Block Island to Jamestown, and most recently swimming the length of Narragansett Bay by swimming 24 miles from Providence, RI to Jamestown, RI. Esteemed producer, Matt Corliss, chronicled Ben’s journey to sobriety and the parallels of his recent swim. The film, “Swim Tuff: How I Swam my Way Out of the Bottle” is projected to be released Spring 2023.

EP 292: Drink - Author Ann Dowsett Johnston
Wednesday Mar 22, 2023
Wednesday Mar 22, 2023
Host: Viv aka Sober_iThrive
Guest: Ann Dowsett Johnston
I am an award-winning journalist and bestselling author, turned psychotherapist. For more than 25 years, I worked at Maclean’s magazine, Canada’s newsweekly, where I was perhaps best known as the chief architect of the Maclean’s university rankings—and for a series of columns on modern life, including “The Boy Can’t Sleep,” anthologized in Carol Shields’ Dropped Threads II.
Drink book by Ann Dowsett JohnstonWinner of seven National Magazine Awards, I am also the recipient of a Southam Journalism Fellowship and the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy. It was for the latter that I prepared a 14-part series on Women and Alcohol in the Toronto Star, looking at the closing gender gap on risky drinking. In 2013, I wrote Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, a book named one of the top 10 of the year by the Washington Post. Part memoir, part journalistic exploration, the book exposes the “pinking” of the alcohol industry. Says Gabor Mate: “The writing is gripping and vivid, the voice personal, the research exacting, the stories revealing if sometimes heartbreaking, the conclusions essential. A triumphant life, a triumphant book.”Since the publication of Drink, I have worked hard to destigmatize mental health and addiction, earning an honorary Doctor of Laws from Queen’s University for my efforts. I am also the recipient of a Transforming Lives award from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the American Research Society on Addiction’s Media Award, plus the T. A. Sweet Award from the Ontario Psychiatric Association for helping address stigma related to mental health and addiction. In 2017, I decided to follow my heart, applying to the Master’s of Social Work program at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. What this represents is the fulfillment of a decades-old dream: to become a psychotherapist. During my internships, I worked at the Jean Tweed Centre in Toronto, and with psychotherapist Jan Winhall at Focusing on Borden.Writing remains a significant part of my life, and I am hard at work on my second book. In my spare time, I am a white-water reader, a lover of nature, and a traveller. I am the mother of one grown son, Nicholas Johnston, also a psychotherapist, who is married and lives in Los Angeles.

Friday Feb 17, 2023
Friday Feb 17, 2023
Ready to quit drinking but not sure where to start? Don't want to go to AA? Think you can quit on your own? You can! Cold Turkey. You are a gray area drinker who can take back control of your life and stop drinking before big problems arise. You know alcohol is not serving you and has become a problem. Your life will be more fulfilling, happier and peaceful without alcohol dragging you down.
Megan Collard lives on the Jersey shore with her family and goldendoodle, (sometimes referred to as her favorite daughter), Penny. She runs a small, real estate company with her husband and is raising 4 school-aged kids. Megan was a “gray area” drinker--a regular drinker who became a heavier, problem drinker overtime but was very much functioning in all ways. Megan did not use a traditional method to stop drinking--she woke up one day and decided she was tired of how alcohol was making her feel. She knew it was keeping her from living her best life so she quit; cold turkey (as the saying goes). Megan has been alcohol free for over two and a half years. She is an active member of her “I Am Sober” app group and the “Sobertown Facebook” group.

Friday Feb 10, 2023
After being diagnosed with MS 37 years ago at the age of 19, I became addicted to amphetamines of any kind because I was so fatigued all the time. 20+ years later I decided to TRY to get sober on my own from crystal meth. Didn't ever happen!! After developing a personal relationship with Jesus, I finally got it licked. Have now been sober since June, 2017.
in 2018 Leslei’s health tanked and left her bedridden…that’s when she started creating a bucket list.
April of 2021 she went skydiving and then again Sept of 2022.
Soon she will be heading to Florida for the DAYTONA 500!
Leslei is grateful for her MS because she was able to find Jesus and get sober!
Leslei is an Amazing #badasssoberwarrior!!

EP 285: Runningandyoga’s Recovery story

Runningandyoga sat down with Viv to tell her amazing Recovery Story!
Runningandyoga grew up in East Germany with an understanding that she would never be able to travel the world, choose her professional career, or speak her thoughts freely. Yet, in November of 1989, when she was 12 years old, everything changed over night. The Berlin Wall came down and with that her country dissolved. Simultaneously her parents got divorced, she faced unwanted changes of her body, (puberty), and in school nobody knew what to teach and who should teach it. Longing for stability in her life, she started to control food and her weight. Later she discovered alcohol as a way to cope with anxiety, depression, and everything else. After failed attempts to moderate her alcohol consumption, she fearfully and begrudgingly tried sobriety in January 2022. She is forever grateful that she found community and support in the I Am Sober online community.

EP 284: Marriage, Boundaries, and Sobriety: Molly’s Journey
Thursday Feb 02, 2023
Thursday Feb 02, 2023
Molly is 34 has been sober for over 2 years but drank heavily (and almost lethally) for nearly a decade. If her depression and suicidal thoughts weren’t going to kill her, a drunk driving accident would’ve. She ran away from the trauma of sexual assault and domestic abuse with alcohol before realizing she deserved the hard work of healing and loving herself. Now newly married and determined to craft a thriving, healthy future for her family and future children, like all of us she is figuring out how to care for herself sober, not compromise her core values, but also bend a little and be soft enough to stay a compassionate partner and wife.

Viv, aka Sober iThrive interviews Dr Peg O'Connor on her book "Higher and Friendly Powers"
This is an amazing interview and we graciously thank Dr O'Connor for coming on the Sobertown Podcast and sharing her amazing insights and wisdom!!
Interview with Peg O'Connor, Professor of Philosophy, Specializing inFeminist, Social, Political Philosophy and Addiction Studies, and Author of:“HIGHER AND FRIENDLY POWERSTRANSFORMING ADDICTION AND SUFFERINGHIGHER”An expansive alternative for those who haveAND FRIENDiv struggled with the "higher power" of AA's 12-stepPOWERS program, Higher and Friendly Powers (WildhousePublications / August 24, 2022) offers a sense of human decency, moral ideals, and even a better version of oneself. In Higher and Friendly Powers, Peg O'Connor,PEG O CONNOR PhD, addresses an audience much like herself: those in recovery who have struggled with the Christian-centric God at the heart of Alcoholics Anonymous. She brings our attention to a little-known fact: the term "higher power," a touchstone in the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, was coined by William James, philosopher, psychologist, and intellectual giant of the early 20 century.By acting as our personal field guide through the world of William James, Peg shows that "higher power" as James conceived it is far more expansive than we might imagine. The book, which combines Peg's deep personal wisdom with James's adventurous intellect, has the power to transform the way we live.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:1 Peg O'Connor, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.• Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of hersobriety because of the concept of a "higher power," she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her new book, Higher and Friendly Powers:Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, August 2022).Dr. O'Connor is also the author of Life on the Rocks: Finding Meaning in Addiction and Recovery (Central Recovery Press,2016), Morality and Our Complicated Form of Life: Feminist Wittgensteinian Metaethics (Penn State, 2008), and Oppression and Responsibility: A Wittgensteinian Approach to Social Practices and Moral Theory (Penn State, 2002). A co-editor to multiple other titles, she is regularly published in trade journals and writes a column, Philosophy Stirred, Not Shaken, for Psychology Today, which has nearly two million total views online and select columns have appeared in the print publication.Dr. O'Connor's expertise has been featured on BBC's FreeThinking and Canadian Public Radio's On Drugs podcast, as well as in print and online publications ranging from The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Cosmo and Marie Claire to Vice and Kinfolk. She has been invited to present on addiction and recovery at some of the country's most prestige universities, in addition to workshops and talks in church basements, classrooms, community centers, and treatment centers.Dr. Peg O'Connor is a recovering alcoholic who maintains that philosophy got and helped her to stay sober. For the last twelve years, she has shifted the focus of her work to using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She understands addiction as a meaning of life problem and no discipline is as well suited as philosophy to address meaning of life questions.
