About Sobertown
Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety.
We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection.
Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual.
But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side.
We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction.

Alternatives to drinkingPositive Recovery with Corinna
When we think about quitting drinking we often worry about what we are going to do with “all that time”. When we get sober, we wonder how we ever had time to drink! I’m this podcast I talk about exercise, meditation, journaling, crafts and my new book: The A-Z of Alcohol and Sobriety. EP 253: Mary HummingbirdsAppitite’s Recovery Story
Saturday Aug 13, 2022
Saturday Aug 13, 2022
Mary AKA HummingbirdsAppetite tells her Story to Viv AKA "Sober I Thrive"
Mary AKA HummingbirdsAppetite tells the story of her journey from addiction to recovery. Suffering from childhood panic attacks and mental compulsions due to OCD led Mary to discovering self harm, alcohol, and drugs as coping mechanisms at a young age. She learned to put on a high functioning mask by earning good grades and maintaining the status quo. She has endured multiple tragedies throughout her life including the death of her parents, her beloved sister as well as friends and loved ones which pushed her further into her addictions.
After seeing how the negative behaviors that she was exhibiting were manifesting in her young daughter, Mary began to understand the error of her ways. She fought through her grief, guilt and shame to educate herself about addiction and build a sobriety toolbox for herself to end the cycle of addiction in her family. This research brought her to IAS where she has crafted her own recovery program and, through inspiration from Sobertown, has become committed to giving back to the community with her graphic design expertise.
Mary has become a huge part of the Sobertown village and is helping us create more resources on the back end of the Sobertownpodcast.com website. Mary also gives back helping other Sober communities other than Sobertown.
Thank you Mary for all you're dong for all of us!! Thank you for sharing your amazing journey and being so vulnerable!! You're absolutely an amazing Sober Warrior!!

EP 247: HOPE ROAD - John Dillon Shares his Recovery Story through Song
Sunday Jun 12, 2022
Sunday Jun 12, 2022
JOHN DILLON is recognized for his work as producer and co-host (along with his wife Vivian Nesbitt) of Art of the Song a one-hour program about songwriting and creativity heard across America on over 100 public radio stations. His book The 20-20 Creativity Solution gives readers a step-by-step process to enhance their creativity. As a luthier, John has built over 80 custom guitars for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Trisha Yearwood, the Mavericks and Steve Earle.
His current project is HOPE ROAD - from Addiction to Recovery, an album of 12 songs that chronicle John’s journey from being a carefree traveling hippie in the ‘60s to serious cocaine and alcohol addiction in the ‘80s. John recalls a ‘divine intervention’ in the form of a run-in with the law. His true recovery journey began at an addiction treatment center in 1992. Subsequent songs on the album show how John has maintained sobriety and spiritual growth through gratitude, service and commitment to a 12-step program.
John lives on a farm in upstate New York with his wife Vivian, her mother, two dogs, two horses and lots of guitars.
John and his wife are going on 30 years of Recovery!! Huge Congrats to both of you!!

EP 244: David’s Recovery Story
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Wednesday May 25, 2022
David is 37 years sober& King13 was curious how!David begins talking about the last night he took a drink, he was thirty six and a regular bar drinker. He remembers taking his first drink at sixteen and thinking he liked it so he would try it again. Over the years his drinking progressed. At first David attending AA Meetings and he was not convinced about the 12 steps and the higher power. However realizing he needed to stop one day after two months of meetings he found his obsession for alcohol lifted and yet he had no logical explanation why. He did work the 12 steps, has never had a slip and considers himself recovered from the cravings and has accepted he is wired differently. He said "when he picks up alcohol it is like rolling the dice" and if you can no longer drink safely, you have a problem. Today no longer an introvert, he is a friend amongst friends and recommends that you do the work in front of you. We do not have to do this alone. This is not a solo sport and a recovery world of friends await.Thank you David.

BPD & Substance Abuse Disorder - Emily 'Fraulein'
Borderline Personality Disorder (or BPD) is an emotional regulation disorder characterized by impulsivity, self-harm, instability, and often heavy substance abuse. After a life crisis in 2019, Fraulein was admitted to the psychiatric hospital, where she was diagnosed with this misunderstood and heavily stigmatized disorder. In the years since, she has found healing through specialized therapy, sobriety, and most importantly - self-compassion. In this episode, she dives into the symptomatic overlap between BPD and substance abuse disorder, describes the comorbidity between the two, and takes us through a practical exercise used in DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy)- a powerful tool to help us conquer impulsivity and take a stand against bad choices.

EP 240: Hatred of Sound and Movement? - King13 Interviews MMC13
Sunday May 15, 2022
Sunday May 15, 2022
Something strange started to happen to MMC13 in her pre-teen years; the whole world suddenly became a barrage on her senses; sounds were too loud, sights were overwhelming, and there seemed to be no reason for it. The condition led her to isolation and misery through much of her teenage and young adult life, and likely played a part in her early drinking as a coping mechanism. Fast-forward 20 years, and the condition(s) finally have names! Misophonia and Misokinesia, which literally translate to mean 'hatred of sound', and 'hatred of movement'. Join us as she explains what these conditions are, how they affected her, and why she believes they're much more common than we realize.

Peggi Coney Author of "The Other Side of Alcohol"
Peggy did not have a drinking problem until her 50's. Having it all, a beautiful family, two homes and also a dream job teaching social work. In 2008, Peggi received a service award amongst seventeen hundred and fifty colleagues and still could not put the drink down. A drinking incident at a reunion family picnic resulted in her daughter saying "if she wanted a relationship with her family she needed to address this problem". Peggy was crushed as she valued her family more than she could bear to lose them. Author of The Other Side Of Alcohol, she takes you through her journey and how she turned her life around. I want the stigma and shame gone, everybody has a valid story and deserves to be heard. It brings us to where we are today. Peggi says "you need to constantly forgive yourself". I could not agree more. The greatest gift you can give yourself is to pour the poison down the sink!

EP 236: SoberSeedling’s Recovery Story
Wednesday May 04, 2022
Wednesday May 04, 2022
SoberSeedling was a good Christian, conservative, straight A student who at a young age was addicted to perfectionism. She attended a Christian College, became a Middle School theatre teacher, still performs today as a singer and works for a brewing company.
After a failed marriage, she simultaneously falls apart and blossoms. Unhealthy relationship patterning leads to domestic violence, as she continues attempting to “fix or save” her partners, while neglecting herself. Her self worth is crushed and her 'identity' questioned, ultimately feeding a growing addiction to alcohol. Her story is one of hope and resilience.
A huge empath, she holds space for everyone and is practicing doing the same for herself. The way she expresses and writes with such honesty will certainly help other victims of domestic violence before it could be too late. And please if you think this may be you, see professional help and pour the poison down the sink.

EP 235: MMC13’s Recovery Story
Friday Apr 29, 2022
Friday Apr 29, 2022
MMC13 remembers thinking at the early age of twenty that she may have an issue with alcohol. Adopted to a loving couple she recalls a normal childhood until her teenage years presented challenges being bullied so she starting drinking to "fit in" like so many teenagers do. Diagnosed with Misophobia & Misokinesia (hatred of certain sounds & movements), MMC explains her high sensitivity. She works her sobriety and accumulates seven and a half years. Her passion for seven family furries and 'rescues' and we both agree that giving back in community fills our souls. Thoughts of moderation pass through and she finds herself at that pivotal moment when it's you or alcohol. Only ONE will win. A fascinating listen where I learnt so much. Thank you MM13.
On a personal note..I lost my friend Karl yesterday and dedicate this podcast to him and his beautiful partner Debbie & his children Cody and Tahlia. See you on the other side mate💚.
