About Sobertown
Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety.
We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection.
Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual.
But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side.
We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction.

Come have a listen as we unapologetically triumph gratitude and self-awareness in sobriety, leaving self-doubt and old coping habits like drinking in a heaping pile of glittery dust.

King 13 has is always impressed by these young men and women who join the IAS community, bravely turn up at zooms and contribute to the community. They have become aware and taken responsibility for their sobriety. We may think that having grown up with 'no alcohol' in the home would influence children not to drink. Not the case, Erin tells how she got involved with drinking, what drove her into the IAS community and the sheer work she did in 2021 to maintain 328 days AF. Erin considers herself a feminist and I see her passion for equality. We women have to support each other, it is key. EP 216: How Do You Help Someone Stop Drinking Before it’s Too Late? What if It’s You?
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Boom Rethink the Drink,
Yesterday I had a chance to talk with my friend Drifter for his Sober Town Podcast. It was International Women's Day so we had planned to talk about the toxicity of alcohol marketing directed at women, but after a couple of days of multiple postings in our communities on the deadly result of alcohol addiction, we decided instead to focus on the questions of "how do you stop drinking before it goes too far?" - "how do you help someone you love who seems lost to the bottle?" Drifter and I have both lost brothers to their addictions and we have both found solid dry ground after breaking out of our addictions. Do we have the answers to these questions with the years of personal experience we both have as the addicted and the loved one of the addict? We came up with two answers by the end of our talk and those answers were all about beacons and light houses. My beacons that guided me to stop drinking and stay sober were young and old and somewhere in between. We all grew up with the basic premise that handling our liquor was a badge of courage in cultures and families that celebrate drinking hard and handling it. Cultures and families that laugh at hangovers, distrust sobriety, celebrates the drug and shame the addict. All of us started drinking as a right of passage from childhood into adulthood. Some of us waited until we came of age and some of us started drinking younger but in one way or another we were mimicking the behavior of the adults that we knew. Maybe we admired their ability to function highly, to handle their booze, or maybe we said we’d never drink like they did, but drink we did because that is what adults do. Those adults were our beacons and we followed where they led us. It makes perfect sense that to find another path beacons of a different sort are needed. And it makes perfect sense that those of us who have fought our way out of addiction after helplessly watching loved ones die- chose to be lighthouses -- join us for our conversation and find the links to the communities and articles we discuss in the Boozemusings post below.

Sobriety - A lifestyle not Death Sentence.
Ft. Rags, No More Wining & Lilo11
When I first decided to quit alcohol the mere thought was an impossible one. I wondered 'how' could I possibly give up alcohol, my constant companion, that went practically everywhere with me.How eliminating poison from our mind & bodies opens up a rebirth to live a content, high anxiety free life.So King invited some OG's with sober experience to share their progress so far. Rags, No More Wining & Lilo11 discuss just how their lives (styles) have changed or not. Sobriety is living 'normal' in HD, clean of substances, the way our bodies were meant to organically function. Yet society is so prevalent with Alcohol Use Disorder. 12.7 % of American are affected. Take note of very wise words from Rags' son Luke (Luke leading the way 9 years sober !!) who expressed his thoughts on the subject. So much wisdom, fun and adventure is the path on sobriety. To be present and be TRUSTED again by YOURSELF and OTHERS, all aspects of your relationships will improve. You are worth it, pour the poison down the sink grab a coffee, get comfy and enjoy.

Monday Feb 28, 2022
Monday Feb 28, 2022
Cross Addiction.
Quote:"Charlotte Davis Kasl Ph.d, author of Many Roads One Journey. Moving Beyond the 12 steps.
"If a person gives up one addiction or dependency without 'healing the wounds' they will switch to another."
King is joined by Armen who openly discusses his own personal experiences with cross addictions'. We stop one and then another appears or is it an 'old habit'. The beauty of sobriety they agree is the clarity with which you are able to make the best decision for you. We again chase the 'quick dopamine release! No matter what your choice with the most common addictions they will only temporarily also fill the void and numb the pain. We may be quick to panic that more is wrong with us than just our primary addiction, maybe so, only you can take a deep look inside and listen.

Monday Feb 28, 2022
Monday Feb 28, 2022
Men and Sobriety.
A-Rod and DadLife join King13 and they agree that sobriety is not gender specific and a lot of alcohol use disorder comes from childhood and trauma. We hide our emotions, why when our bodies are naturally reacting to our emotions. We are told to resist expressing emotions. Stored emotions reveal themselves in sobriety and whilst painful to work through it should not kill you. We have to eliminate the 'stigma' of men having to be strong and not expressive. Thank you to A-Rod and Dadlife for helping to get the word out.

EP 207: Peanut Interviews Tami @ WagonCoffee Roasters, LLC
Thursday Feb 24, 2022
Thursday Feb 24, 2022
Peanut5280 had a chance this week to sit down with Tami Canaday the Founder/Owner of Wagon Coffee Roasters, LLC https://wagoncoffeeroasters.com/. They specialize in COFFEE FOR ADDICTION RECOVERY *Support Women In Recovery from Addiction *Support Farmer's Livelihood Through Our Ethically Sourced Beans *Support Clean Energy Through Our Zero-Emissions Roaster. Tami with Wagon Coffee Roasters LLC aligns with her husband Ryan and FREE - A Spiritual Community for Addicts, Loved Ones of Addicts, and Spiritual Refugees https://freespiritualcommunity.com/.
Tami, Owner/Founder of Wagon Coffee, identifies as a Recovery Advocate and Loved One of an Addict. Her husband, Ryan, is 8+ years sober. She has witnessed the beautiful transformation of recovery through him and within their marriage. In 2018, Ryan and Tami launched a nonprofit called FREE—for Addicts, loved ones of Addicts, and spiritual refugees. They create space for healing, recovery, and spiritual connection. Because of FREE, Tami learned more about women in recovery, their stories, the alarming and increasing addiction stats, and the hardships they face as WOMEN in recovery; 5.7% of women have a substance use disorder in the United States. She also discovered some staggering COVID-19 statistics...according to a Journal of American Medical Report (JAMA) report Women, in particular, exhibited a 41% increase in alcohol consumption over a 2019 baseline. Tami decided to do something, in the midst of a pandemic, to help women in recovery. And it just so happens [ironically enough] that 90% of recovering addicts and alcoholics drink coffee! Wagon Coffee was founded in 2020 by Tami Canaday in response to the critical need for assistance for those afflicted with alcohol and drug addiction. So, along comes wagon coffee...Why “Wagon”?! It comes from the century old saying, when you are sober, you are “on the wagon”. They are “being the wagon” by guiding women in recovery towards wholeness by providing second chances through employment, encouragement, & empowerment. Together Ryan and Tami are immersed in the process of offering healing, wholeness, inclusivity, & sustainability. Join them in being part of the solution.

Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
Join Wingy and Drifter as they talk: Neuroplasticity and the Discovery in Recovery - Open Your Mind to the Possibilities
Neuroplasticity has fascinated me since I read Marc Lewis’ book The Biology of Desire when I was 8 months sober. It was the last of many books that I read that year on the topic of addiction and recovery. One of the interesting things about Marc’s book was that unlike the other books I had been reading it did not help me stop drinking, or inspire me to stay sober, but rather explained the awesome, unexpected growth that I was experiencing in recovery. It explained why my recovery felt quite a bit more like an adventure than a chore. Not recovery – discovery! The Biology of Desire examines how our brains can evolve and change if we break the isolation of addiction by reaching out creatively to evolve. It offers positive reflections of the experience that people can have by connecting with generosity of spirit rather than retreating in resentment when they stop using drugs and alcohol to numb out. As I read the book, rather than imagining the possibility of what Marc was describing, I recognized my experience in his words. I responded YES! That is exactly what’s happening right now! My brain was growing and evolving as I wrote my way sober in a creative community, and Marc explained why through the science of neuroplasticity.
