About Sobertown
Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety.
We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection.
Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual.
But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side.
We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction.

Welcome back to Sober Town! This week, host King 13 (Debs) sits down with Andrew J. Minuto, author of Fatally Resilient, for a raw and honest conversation about addiction, recovery, and resilience.
Andrew opens up about his childhood move from Brooklyn to Las Vegas, the emotional isolation that planted the seeds of his addiction, and the four attempts at recovery it took to finally find lasting sobriety. He shares the devastating loss of both parents within months of each other, a painful divorce, serious health struggles including sepsis, and the custody battle for his daughter — and how he came out the other side stronger, more self-validated, and finally free from needing others to tell him who to be.
Together, Andrew and Debs dig into themes of self-worth, the difference between sobriety and true recovery, the importance of community and support, and why humility is the key to never repeating the same mistakes twice.
If you or someone you love is struggling, this episode is a powerful reminder: you are not alone, and it's never too late to turn your past into your greatest strength.

For most of my life, I was searching for what recovery would ultimately give me, only without realizing that's what I was doing. Actively avoiding the recovery community, I looked for it in achievement, relationships, career success, and countless attempts to outrun adversity, but nothing could fill the void I was trying to escape.Everything changed when recovery itself became the foundation instead of the destination. My addiction started in college and quickly became a problem until a collective family effort arrested it. However, learning that both of my parents were terminally ill several years later sent me on a downward spiral, ultimately ending in divorce and every conceivable consequence. These were the precipitating events that propelled me into recovery. Since then, my life has been defined by rebuilding rather than surviving. I would later face two separate diagnoses of testicular cancer, discovering that resilience isn't something you're born with—it's something you build one decision at a time.Professionally, I've served as a special education teacher, Director of Operations for an inpatient substance abuse facility, and now work as an independent health insurance broker. I'm also the author of Fatally Resilient, a memoir that explores grief, adversity, resilience, and the transformative power of choosing growth over surrender.Today, my passion is helping others recognize that recovery isn't simply about breaking free from what holds us back—it's about building a life so meaningful that we no longer want to escape it.

EP 408: Interview with Author Austin Rampt
Jun 25, 2026
Jun 25, 2026
43 min
In this episode of Sobertown Podcast, host Michal Charles speaks with author and recovery advocate Austin Rampt about his incredible journey through addiction to sobriety. Austin shares about his personal life, beginning with childhood tics and anxiety following his family's move to Japan, through his rapid descent into drug addiction starting very young, multiple rehab programs, and a 22-month period living in Mexico where he reached what he believed would be his final point of no return. He describes his struggles with relapse after significant stints of sobriety, including a severe overdose that led to stage 4 renal failure, and his eventual return to 12-step recovery where he found lasting sobriety. Austin emphasizes that while knowledge about addiction is important, true recovery requires daily spiritual maintenance and connection with others who understand the experience. This is one sober journey you’re not going to want to miss!
Austin Rampt spent over a decade fighting an addiction he couldn't name, couldn't control, and couldn't shake: no matter how many times he tried. Eight rehab programs. Multiple stints in jail. Time living with the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico. At the lowest point, he was barely surviving, not living.Today he's the opposite of that person. He is an Entrepreneur, Father of 5 kids and Author. Currently residing in Orlando, FL His time is focused in 12-step recovery, Service, Growth and Family. His memoir One Last Hit is his way of saying: if I made it through that, you can make it through this.

Trigger warning: This episode includes several mentions of suicide and discussion of the loss of a family member to it. Please listen with caution if this is a sensitive topic. In this episode of Sobertown Podcast, host Michal speaks with author David Deane Haskell about his memoir "Wounded Angels" and topics relating to trauma healing, addiction recovery, and inner child work. David shares his personal journey through substance abuse and codependency, discussing how childhood trauma manifested in his life through extreme substance abuse, relationship difficulties, and self-sabotaging behavior. They explore the concept of shame, particularly David's profound experience of toxic shame at age nine after learning about his mother's suicide, and discuss shadow work techniques for accessing and healing different aspects of the inner child. The conversation covers the difference between "fake it till you make it" in early recovery versus toxic positivity, with David emphasizing the importance of authentic self-expression and community support in the recovery process. They also discuss how creativity can serve as a healing outlet after loss.
David Deane Haskell writes about profound loss, addiction, creative expression, wellness, and recovery. His mother died under tragic circumstances when he was four — a fact that followed him into every room he ever entered. He later spent nearly ten years as a drummer and show creator at Disney and Universal, performing joy while privately carrying wounds he hadn't yet found words for. After eleven years of isolation, his work returned through Wounded Angels, written from the middle of the healing process rather than from a polished finish line. His current conversations center on trauma, recovery, voice, inner child work, and the creative life that followed.

Â
On the SoberTown Podcast, Melissa shares how her faith in Christ led her out of a 20-year opioid addiction that began after dental surgery and escalated into homelessness, repeated overdoses, and losing her marriage and children. Raised in church as a music minister’s daughter, she describes childhood illness, being told she couldn’t have children, later having four, and emotional pain tied to her mother’s bipolar disorder that fueled her drug use. After periods of sobriety, she relapsed following the deaths of her mother and husband, then overdosed while her children were with strangers, which she describes as the moment God told her “no more.” Melissa recommitted her life to God, regained stability, and founded a women’s ministry, Daughters Heaven Bound, urging listeners to seek help, hold onto God, and find purpose in sobriety.

Justin shares his journey from high school teacher and coach to author, explaining how his daily journaling practice over several years inspired him to write his book "From Rock Bottom to Redemption." He initially planned to create just six copies for his children but decided to expand the book's reach after realizing it could help others in recovery. Justin shares his recovery journey, describing how he maintained a successful public persona while struggling privately with addiction. He explains that recovery was initially forced upon him due to ultimatums from his then-wife and her family, rather than being something he voluntarily sought. This episode highlights that sometimes, no matter the path that gets us to recovery, it's the destination that truly matters!

Podcast description: In this episode of Sobertown Podcast, Michal and Jeff discuss recovery from addiction and the role that mental health disorders play. Jeff explains his counseling approach, emphasizing the importance of accepting reality rather than resisting it, and the concept that substances distort reality. They discuss how recovery is an individual process that requires connection with others, and how treatment centers help people by removing them from daily stressors to allow for rational decision-making. They delve into the role that dopamine plays in addiction, as well as exploring the topics of resentment and betrayal. The conversation also covered Jeff's book "Simple Sh!t for Complicated People," which aims to provide an accessible, conversational guide to recovery principles. I often hear in sober meetings look for the similarities not the differences. The most common words I have heard from individuals who start a share is "I grew up in an alcoholic home". I had no idea just how many families have been affected by AUD. I have heard this statement from folks all around the globe. It is a society accepted pandemic of wild proportions. My research indicates that high numbers of families have suffered with addiction and produced generations of family members who are also affected and still suffering today. So if this topic interests you, grab a cuppa, take a listen and hopefully hear something that can help you and your families in the recovery journey. Remember you are not alone in this arena.

EP 396: Early Days-Emotional Pitfalls
Mar 10, 2026
Mar 10, 2026
15 min
In this episode of Early Days, host Michal Charles welcomes Sobertown Podcast listeners and introduces Sobertown resources before focusing on difficult emotions in recovery, including anxiety, fear, and delving into the difference between shame and guilt. She explains how seemingly small setbacks can trigger intense urges to drink and shares that stress and anxiety have been major triggers for her, as they were for her birth mother. Michal notes that many who started drinking at a young age never learned healthy coping skills, and those bad patterns were then reinforced by alcohol-centered media and culture.
Referencing former podcast guest Martin Lockett, she describes guilt as a potentially useful moral signal while explaining that shame fuels isolation, stigma, and relapse, arguing for compassion over judgment and emphasizing taking sobriety one day at a time. She also highlights boredom as a relapse risk and recommends new hobbies or plans to fill newly available time, encouraging listeners to be gentle with themselves.

Sobertown Podcast host Michal interviews keynote speaker, author, and substance abuse counselor Martin Lockett, who served 17.5 years in prison after a New Year’s Eve 2003 DUI crash in Portland that killed two women in long-term recovery and severely injured a third individual.Â
In this podcast, Martin describes early alcohol dependence, the crash, and the newspaper article about the victims that inspired him to honor their legacies through prevention and addiction work. In prison he pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in psychology, completed substance abuse treatment, learned the difference between sobriety and recovery, and began sharing his story through DUI victim impact panels.Â
Upon release in 2021, he became a counselor and later a director focused on prevention and equity. Martin helped launch a “custody to counseling pipeline,” and now speaks nationally on DUI prevention, recovery, guilt vs. shame, and self-forgiveness.

He served 17½ years in prison following a DUI-related crash that claimed two lives and permanently injured another. At his sentencing, Lockett made a solemn vow to the victims’ families and friends to devote the rest of his life to honoring their legacies by helping others confront substance use disorders and speaking candidly about the devastating consequences of impaired driving.
During his incarceration, Lockett earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a Master of Science in Psychology, obtained state certification as a substance abuse counselor, and served as a mentor and role model to fellow inmates. He is the author of two books, Prison to Purpose Pipeline and My Prison Life, and began sharing his story through DUI victim impact panels—work he initiated while still incarcerated.
Since his release in 2021, Lockett continues this mission by providing counseling support for individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges and sharing his powerful message of accountability, redemption, and hope at DUI victim impact panels, alcohol highway safety classes, high schools, colleges, and conferences nationwide, using his lived experience to inspire change and save lives.
